A news release from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) indicates that there is an October 3 deadline for healthcare providers to sign up for the ICD-10 testing program from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The first testing of Medicare’s system for processing claims using the new ICD-10 will allow an estimated 850 health care professionals to view a claim through from submission to remittance advice, according to APTA.

The testing program will run the week of January 26 to 30, 2015, and the testing process will include submission of claims with ICD-10 codes to the fee-for-service claims system, adjudication of claims, and the production of accurate remittance advices. The APTA news release notes that the program will allow a sample of group providers to work with Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and the Common Electronic Data Interchange (CEDI) contractors to evaluate the system for processing new codes.

CMS is targeting a broad cross-section of providers and will select testing participants based on the needs of the study. The APTA news release indicates that volunteers can apply through their MAC’s website by October 3, and the MACs and CEDI will notify the volunteers who have been selected and provide them with information by October 24.

CMS is planning additional testing later in 2015. The ICD-10 codes are scheduled to be implemented on October 1, 2015. For more information on the testing process, click here.
